Ingredients
- 1 pound day-old French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 8 large eggs
- 2 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, for the topping
- 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, for the topping
- 8 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
- Powdered sugar and maple syrup, for serving
Before you cook
- Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking dish and pile the bread cubes into it.
- Whisk the eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt together in a large bowl.
- Pour the custard over the bread and press the cubes down until they are all wet.
- Cover the dish and refrigerate it overnight.
- Rub the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and cold butter together with your fingers in a bowl until crumbly, then chill the topping.
Steps
- Take the casserole and the topping out of the refrigerator and let them sit for 30 minutes.
- Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Scatter the streusel evenly over the soaked bread.
- Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until the top is browned and crisp and the center is puffed and no longer wobbly.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes so it settles.
- Dust it with powdered sugar, cut it into squares and pass maple syrup at the table.
