Vegemite on Toast
by CommunityKitchen
AustralianEasy5 minServes 1
The Australian breakfast staple invented in the 1920s as a local answer to Marmite, a thick yeast-extract paste so intensely salty that it's meant to be scraped on in a thin film under butter, never spread thick like jam.

Ingredients
- 2 slices bread
- 2 tsp butter, softened
- 1/4 tsp Vegemite
Before you cook
- Let the butter soften at room temperature so it spreads easily.
Steps
- Toast the bread until golden and crisp.
- Spread the softened butter over the hot toast so it melts in.
- Scoop a small amount of Vegemite onto a knife, about an eighth of a teaspoon per slice.
- Scrape the Vegemite thinly and evenly across the buttered toast, thin enough that the toast still shows through.
- Serve immediately while the toast is warm.
