An Adelaide institution born on 1890s pie carts, a traditional meat pie submerged upside-down in a bowl of thick green pea soup and finished with a swirl of tomato sauce.

Ingredients
- 4 individual meat pies (beef and gravy filling), store-bought or homemade
- 2 cups (400g) dried split green peas
- 6 cups (1.4L) chicken or ham stock
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 onion, chopped
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Tomato sauce (ketchup), to serve
Before you cook
- Rinse the dried split peas.
- Chop the onion.
Steps
- Bake the meat pies according to the package instructions if they aren't already baked.
- Combine the split peas, stock, onion and baking soda in a large pot.
- Bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to a low simmer and cover partially.
- Simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until the peas break down into a thick, mushy soup.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Ladle a generous amount of hot pea soup into each bowl.
- Place a meat pie upside-down into the center of each bowl of soup.
- Top each pie with a swirl of tomato sauce.
- Serve immediately with a spoon.
