Plain steamed buns deep-fried to a crisp golden shell and dunked in sweetened condensed milk, a beloved Hong Kong treat that turns leftover mantou into dessert-for-breakfast.

Ingredients
- 8 plain steamed mantou buns (fresh or frozen)
- 750ml vegetable or corn oil, for frying
- 200ml sweetened condensed milk, for dipping
Before you cook
- If the mantou are frozen, steam them for 5 minutes to thaw and soften before frying.
- Pour the condensed milk into a small serving bowl.
Steps
- Pour the oil into a deep pot and heat it to 175C.
- Slide 2 to 3 mantou into the hot oil at a time, without crowding the pot.
- Fry for 1 to 2 minutes, turning once, until the buns are golden brown all over.
- Lift the fried buns out and drain them on paper towel.
- Repeat with the remaining mantou.
- Cut each fried bun in half or quarters while still hot.
- Serve immediately with the bowl of condensed milk for dipping.
