Before you cook

Steps

  1. Warm the milk until it feels warm to the touch, not hot.
  2. Stir the yeast and 1 tablespoon of the sugar into the warm milk.
  3. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes until foamy on top.
  4. Whisk the flour, remaining sugar and salt together in a large bowl.
  5. Add the yeast mixture, one egg and the softened butter to the flour.
  6. Mix and knead for 8 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour until doubled.
  8. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  9. Roll each piece into a flat triangle about 8 inches long and 4 inches wide at the base.
  10. Lay a strip of ham along the wide base of each triangle.
  11. Roll each triangle up from the wide base to the point, like a croissant.
  12. Place the rolls seam-side down on a lined baking sheet, curving the ends in slightly.
  13. Cover and let the rolls rise for 30 minutes until puffy.
  14. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  15. Brush each roll with the beaten egg.
  16. Bake for 18 minutes until deep golden brown.
  17. Brush the hot rolls with the melted butter.
  18. Serve warm.
